Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala becomes the new Director-General of the WTO

Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has today been formally announced as the new Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

Dr Iweala, 66 holds a PhD in Economics and Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and had a 25-year stint at the World Bank ending her career as a Managing Director.

She was the first woman to be Minister of Finance in Nigeria. Her close rival, Yoo Mhung-Hee nicknamed the Devil’s Advocate was the first woman to be Minister of Trade in South Korea after 70 years.

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala sits on the board of Twitter Inc, Standard Chartered Bank, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, and the African Risk Capacity (ARC).
