ECOWAS give Mali military leaders Sept 15 to name President

West African regional bloc, ECOWAS has been pressuring the new Malian military junta to hand over power to civilian rule.

The Malian military government seized power from President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita last month and ECOWAS is requesting they appoint a civilian to head the transition government by September 15.

ECOWAS has issued sanctions on Mali since the coup, including but not limited to closing borders and banning trade relations.

In a concluding statement at the ECOWAS summit in Niamey, Niger Republic, ECOWAS Commission Chief, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou insisted that the Malian civilian transition president and prime minister must be appointed no later than September 15.
